Dental wax is edible, but it can be challenging to eat with the dental wax on your teeth. So, it is advisable to remove the dental wax before you eat your food . ● If you find it too painful to eat without the dental wax , replace the wax on your braces after your meal.
Replace the wax twice a day, or whenever it starts to fall off. Do not leave it on for more than two days, as bacteria can build up in the wax . The wax will pick up food as you eat. If the braces are too painful to let you eat without wax , replace the dirty wax after you finish your meal.
If you are using regular dental wax , try smooshing it between your fingers to warm it and make it more malliable before applying it to your brackets . If you have poking wires at the very back of your mouth (poking straight into your cheek), you won’t get wax or silicone to stick to it.
Candle wax : If you have candles at home, break off a small piece of wax . Use your fingers to roll it into a ball around the size of a small pea. When the wax is warm and malleable, put it on the area of the brace that is causing the problem.
You will usually have the most soreness on the second or third day after you get the braces on. On the fourth day, you will still have soreness , but you will feel like you have “turned the corner.” The soreness will decrease on each successive day until you feel back to normal after about one or two weeks.
You can try various alternatives to braces wax to protect your cheek and gums from braces and reduce pain and irritation. Dental silicone, beeswax, and cheese wax are the best alternatives to braces wax .
Cleansing your mouth with warm salt water can be one of the best ways to relieve any discomfort inside your mouth you may be feeling from your braces , especially if your braces are cutting the side of your mouth or rubbing your cheeks. Add ½ teaspoon of salt to warm water and stir until completely dissolved.
The lips, cheeks and tongue may also become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the surface of the braces . You can put wax on the braces to lessen this. This is to be expected throughout treatment. Don’t worry!
Some patients don’t feel pain after their regular appointments – but others experience discomfort for anywhere from 1-3 days. If you’re a new patient, there is some good news ahead – after the first six months, soreness tends to lessen with each appointment.
The orthodontic wax will eventually wear away by itself. However, if you want to remove some wax that you have just applied, you can try using a small, sharp took like a proxy brush or a toothpick. Or, you could try regular dental floss.
Break off a piece of wax the size of a small pea and roll it between your fingers until it is pliable. When the wax is a soft ball, flatten it slightly and press it over the point of irritation. Remove it using your fingers or by brushing it off with a toothbrush.
Vaseline will melt and dissolve and won’t do very much. Braces are off!!!
It’s still possible to enjoy classics such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich while wearing braces . Chunky peanut butter should be avoided altogether, but creamy peanut butter is usually fine. Just remember to brush your teeth as soon as possible to remove all peanut butter from the brackets.
